  • Name George RICHISON  [1
    Title 64
Born c.1762  , , , Ireland Find all individuals with events at this location
    • Estimate of birth is based on 22 years prior to birth of 1st presumed child, an unknown female born c.1784 but in the 1800 U.S. census with George and Ellen.
    • In the 1880 census, John R., s/o George & Ellen Richison & living with his son John Webster, claims both his parents were born in Ireland.

Also in the 1880 census, John R., s/o George & Ellen Richison & living with his son Jasper Newton, claims his father was born in Germany.

Since John Webster and Jasper Newton were brothers, how can father be in two places at once? Two enumerations of the same person? Look at the Research Notes on John R. Richison's page for a possible explanation and evaluation of this conflicting information.

Another account is closed as of 2 Aug 1823 reinforcing that as the death date. The estate file is case no. A177 in the Clark County Probate Court and is many pages long with signatures of several family members. Although the estate is listed as Geo. Notes
    • 1790 - 1810 Pennsylvania
Cannot find George in 1790 in PA and the George Richardson in 1800 and 1810 in Abington Twp., Montgomery County, PA is still there in 1820 so not this George. Have him in Cross Creek Twp., Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1800 but two unknown females and would include Oliver Richison as another of George and Ellen's sons. Have him in OH in 1820 & he died in 1823 so probably he came from PA between abt 1803-1820.

      -------------------------
The only evidence in the estate papers of George, Sr. that he owned land is the fact that tax was paid for him in 1823 after his death. It could be a RE tax but not at all sure of that.

[seems a bit old for this George but perhaps a relative or the older generation?]
      ----------------------------------
    • There are no Ohio Federal Census records for 1790, 1800, or 1810. None was taken in 1790 of Ohio which was still the Northwest Territory, and both 1800 and 1810 were lost for most of Ohio.

There is a George Richardson in Cross Creek Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1800. Most of the information fits with a couple of exceptions. One male, aged 10 thru 15 cannot be accounted for. There is one female of age 16 thru 25 and another age 26 thru 44. One of them could be Ellen, George's wife but the other cannot be identified at this time. I'm leaning toward thinking the younger one is Ellen and the older one perhaps her mother or mother-il.

A page-by-page search of Cross Creek Twp., Washington Co., PA in 1800 revealed no other name of real interest. There is one Andrew Ferguson and a history of Washington County mentions him under Cross Creek Township but none of the descendents' names sounded at all familiar.

If the male 10 thru 15 is a son born prior to Eleanor, he would be old enough to never appear in another census with George and Ellen.

      Richeson, Geo
      Richio David
      John
[other names of possible interest are John Allen, Geo Cook, Andrew Forgeson a tailor,]

There is no Geo. or George Rich*son in Washington County, PA in 1810 which is what I would expect if he had moved on to Ohio before the enumeration.

The 1850, 1860, and 1870 U.S. censuses list Jane Richison Cook's birthplace as Pennsylvania. If she is their daughter, George and Ellen may not have moved to Ohio until sometime after Jane's birth on 11 March 1803. Ohio became a state in 1803 so that may have been a reason to rush to the new state and get land as quickly as possible.

Everything seems to point to this family coming to Ohio sometime before 1820 -- roughly 1803-1814. While a John Richinson is mentioned in History of Clark Co., Ohio, page 707, as being one of the early settlers between 1800-1810, John R. would have only been about 10 years of age so must be another Richison/Richeson/Richinson in the area. The absence of George being named here might indicate he came after 1810.

Eleanor married in 1814 and when she filed for a widow's pension many years later, a John Richison and a Jane Cook both signed affidavits that they had witnessed the wedding. John R. would have been age 14 and Jane would have been age 11 when Eleanor wed. The other three supposed siblings of Eleanor, Andrew, George Jr., and Eppy who might have also attended the wedding, were all deceased before 1872 when the pension application was filed.
      -----------------------
There is a George Richison in Fairfield, Westmoreland (just east of Washington Co.), PA and the ages are correct for George & Ellen, but there is only 1 male & 1 female w/them. Eleanor would have been 17 & she didn't marry until 1814 so it would be expected to find her still at home. Andrew would have been 14 & George Jr., 12 so would have expected both to be at home as well. Eppy & John would have been age 10 or less & Jane would have been only 7, so even if this could be our George, either Eppy or Jane was missing as well as the 3 oldest siblings.
      ---------------
Also 1810, in Fannett Twp., Franklin Co., PA, a George and William Richeson appear on the same page.

Some early marriages of Hamilton County were kept from the beginning of its organization. John D. Caldwell copied these marriage records which were later published. Caldwell's original marriage abstracts are currently housed in the Cincinnati Historical Society. Although there may be some discrepancies, these marriage records are extremely important in determining the names of some of the earliest Ohio residents. They help fill the void where there are no other records for this early time period.
