MARTIN F. RICHESON
State Center township can boast of no better citizen or progressive agriculturist than Martin F. Richeson, a plain, quiet worker, who tries to do his full duty to himself, his neighbor and the state and nation, without thought of applause or reward, save the material success and the respect that are due such a career as his has been from his boyhood up. He was born in Harrison county, Ohio, March 7, 1848, and when seven years old he moved with his parents to Illinois, in 1855, and in the spring of 1866 the family came to Jasper county, Iowa, and in 1867 they located on what they call "the old home place" in State Center township. In 1870 Mr. Richeson moved on the place he now owns and occupies and which he has developed to one of the choicest farms of the township, containing two hundred acres of choice and productive land, in section 34, of State Center township. He has lived to see land advance from five dollars per acre to two hundred dollars per acre. He has here a model farm, a modern and commodious home, with every convenience.
Daniel Richeson, father of the subject, was born near Carlyle, Clark county, Ohio, October 9, 1822, and died in Rhodes, Iowa, on June 2, 1903. He married Keziah Barkhurst, who was born in Harrison county, Ohio, April 29, 1821, and whose death occurred in Rhodes, Iowa, on August 8, 1884. This family has in its possession a valuable written genealogical record extending over a period of four hundred years, and beginning with the time of Sir Francis Drake.
There were nine children in Daniel Richeson's family, namely: Charles Andrew, born in 1844, died in Illinois in 1866; John, born in Harrison county, Ohio, in February, 1846, died on February 9, 1846, Mary Ellen, born in Harrison county, Ohio, on December 22, 1845, died in infancy; Martin F., of this review; Mrs. Phoebe Ann Bullock, born in 1849, lives in Nebraska; Larkin C., born on September 26, 1852, in Morgan county, Ohio, died on April 20, 1903; Mrs. Sarah Haynes, born in Morgan county, Ohio, May 4, 1854, died on August 24, 1896; William D., born in Bureau county, Illinois, July 22, 1857, is living in Illinois; Mrs. Emma Batsole, born in Bureau county, Illinois, November 16, 1859, lives in Marshalltown; George, born in Bureau county, Illinois, February 16, 1863, is living on the old home place in Center township.
Martin F. Richeson was married on March 10, 1872, to Elizabeth Hughes, who was born October 30, 1849, the daughter of Mason Hughes, who was born in North Carolina in 1810, and who is deceased. He married Fannie Rice, who was born in Tennessee in 1820, and died May 4, 1878. They were the parents of five daughters and three sons, namely: Thomas, born February 14, 1840, lives in Rhodes; Mrs. Mary Walham, born February 28, 1847, died July 17, 1874; Elizabeth, wife of the subject; Mattie, born December 17, 1851, lives with her brother Thomas, of Rhodes; Mrs. Samanthan Caroline Garis, born May 2, 1854, lives in Maxwell, Iowa; Sarah Jane, who married a Mr. Kelly, was born February 10, 1857, died June 5, 1889; Henry C., born March 8, 1859, lives in Oklahoma; John B., born June 2, 1862, lives in Webster City, Iowa, and is a partner of Claude Richeson, a nephew in the mercantile business at that place.
To Mr. and Mrs. Richeson have been born three sons and two daughters, namely: Charlels M., born at Round Grove, Eden township, February 16, 1873, lives near his parents in State Center township; Mrs. Bessie F. Laughlin, born August 4, 1876, live nea Oskaloosa, Iowa; Claude H., born February 7, 1878, is engaged with his uncle, John Hughes, in the mercantile business in Webster City, Iowa; Alpha, born December 17, 1880, died in infancy. January 20, 1881; Roland E. born June 15, 1885, is with his parents on the farm. The three youngest living children graduated from the State Center high school, and the eldest attended the same institution.
Mr. Richeson is a veteran of the great Civil War, having enlisted in the Union army at Princeton, Illinois, in January, 1865, and was mustered out in August of the same year. He was a private in Company A, One Hundred and Forty-eighth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and was with the western dividion of the Army of the Tennessee.
Mr. Richeson has never sought office, yet has interested himself to the extent that he has served as road supervisor and school director. He is now trusting the more arduous duties of the farm to the younger members of the family, having laid by ample means to insure his old age from want. He is condiserate yet indulgent toward his family and neighbors, generous and optimistic. Politcally, he is a Republican.
