RICHISON - Correspondence: 21 [a letter from Frank Vaughn Richison to Shirley Richison Fields, 21 Jun 1989]
. . . I am sorry to say this, but I have many more fond memories of my father's side of the family, then I do of my mother's. I always felt more comforable with them. The reason for this is that I used to feel that my mother's brothers were 'hicks from the sticks' and boorish. My mother would probably turn over in her grave if she was to read this, but this was how I felt, and I can't help it . .

. . . Carmen Alexander was a farmer-auctioneer, who raised Chester White pigs which he exhibited at fairs in Indiana. He reportedly won many ribbons for them. He also had many Leghorn chickens which were egg producers, and they sold many eggs around Portland. He also was very sucessful in his auctin[sic] sales around the area. His wife was Della, (nee Longnecker), who was beyong[sic] any doubt, was one of the most sloppy, inept house-keepers it has been my misfortune to encounter. They had one daughter, who died when quite young. The only room in the whole house that was clean, and I do mean clean, and spotless was the bedroom of their daughter who had died. Aunt Della would go out and slop the pigs and feed the chickens and come into the house with all kinds of muck on her shoes and apron and start getting a meal without bothering to clean up before cooking. This is of course why we kids fought tooth and nail to get out of going to her house for a meal. Aunt Della and Uncle Carmen were good hearted people, but we couldn't stand their unsanitary habits . . .
