  • Name James Harvey ALEXANDER  [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Born 8 Mar 1835  , Preble, Ohio, USA Find all individuals with events at this location  [1, 7, 8, 9, 10
    • Age 45, 1880 census, bet 2 Jun 1834-1 Jun 1835, OH
    • Proof Argument:
1835 is the birth year for James after careful evaluation of the sources available, and March 8th is not directly disputed by any of the sources. Three records or groups of records differ as to the birth year. The minor differences in census records can be attributed to an informant who didn't really know James' age, and the difference on his marriage record to Emma Young is understandable with the large difference is their ages. And even with the expectation that children are aware of the age of their parents, an error by a grown child no longer in constant contact with the parent is not surprising. The Civil War Draft Registration is the strongest source we have as James would have had to given the information in person to a governmental agency. At this time, it is reasonable to conclude that James Harvey Alexander was born on 8 March 1835 in Preble County, Ohio.

    Notes
    • James also had a step-daughter, Osse, age 10 living with him, Susan, and his son Silurus on 14 Jun in the 1880 census. She is listed as Osse Alexander but suspect her legal name was not Alexander.

In the 1885 Kansas State Census, Osa L. Hughes, age 15, female, white, is still living with James & Susan so this appears to be the Osse from the 1880 census.
