      Subject: Re Elijah Priest

Mark -- Please excuse the long delay in responding to your wonderful e-mail regarding Elijah Priest. I am a member of the California legislature, and the incoming Assembly Budget Chairman, and we are hours away from a budget and I have been very busy the last six weeks. I have pasted in information below about Elijah Priest, Sr., which you had asked for. Your information about Elijah Jr. was helpful, and it might have been (or information I had received about the cemetery) the reason I added the brief blurb below about him in my notes. It is also quite likely that Hannah Mock was the sister of Frederick Mock, who married one of Elijah's sisters. I have pasted that information in below also. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

      John Laird
      _________
Elijah Priest -- the seventh child of Jeremiah and Millie. He was born February 8, 1792 in Culpeper County. Miami County Ohio marriage records show an Elijah Priest marrying a Hannah Mock on April 30, 1812. They had at least three children, Margaret, born 1812, Hannah Ann, and Frederick, born 1818.

Elijah is shown in the 1830 Ohio census in Clark County in Pike Township with a boy and girl under five, a boy between ten and fifteen, a man and woman between fifteen and twenty, a man between the age of thirty and forty and a woman between the age of forty and fifty.

In the History of Clark County, is was written that "The Christian Church was organized in 1839 at the house of Elijah Priest, under the charge of Rev. J. Kirby. The original members were John Priest and his wife Catherine, Andrew Clark and wife Nancy, and Mary Clark . . . "

Elijah Priest is shown in Pike Township, Clark County in the 1840 census. The household includes one man between sixty and seventy, a female between fifty and sixty, a man between twenty and thirty, a female between fifteen and twenty, and a boy and girl each between ten and fifteen.

Elijah is shown, as is his son Frederick, in the 1843 Tax Duplicate Record for Delaware County, Indiana, in Center Township.

Elijah is shown in the 1860 Indiana census in Delaware County, Center Township, a farmer, age 68, born in Virginia. With Elijah in 1860 are Hannah, 77, born in South Carolina, Hannah M., 18, born in Ohio, and Mary E., age 16, born in Ohio. In 1870, Elijah is 78, "retired farmer", born in Virginia, with Hannah, 86, "former keeping house", born in Virginia.

In the Indiana Wills Index for 1851-1880, there is a will listed for Elijah Priest in Delaware County in 1880 (book 3, page 305). Elijah is shown in Delaware County’s Parker Moore Cemetery, having died February 26, 1880 at 88 years and 18 days. Hannah is shown as the wife of Elijah, Sr., in the same cemetery, having died February 20, 1871 at the age of 87 years, 10 mos., and 2 days.

Frederick Priest -- son of Elijah and Hannah. Frederick is shown in the 1843 Tax Duplicate book for Delaware County, Indiana, as is his father, in Center Township. He is shown on the same census page in 1860 in Delaware County as Elijah, age 42, a farmer born in Ohio, with Leah, 36, born in Virginia. Jefferson and Polly Clark are between Elijah and Frederick.

Shown in 1870 in Delaware County, age 52, a farmer born in Ohio, with Leah, age 45 "keeping house" and born in Virginia, with John Russell, 23, a "farm laborer" born in Indiana. Next door to them is Juliet Priest, 14, born in Indiana and "attending school".

In Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Delaware County are buried Frederick Priest, born May 26, 1818 and died November 4, 1894(shown with "wife Leah") and Leah Priest, born June 28, 1824, and died May 27, 1892 (shown with "husband Frederick").

Margaret Priest -- daughter of Elijah and Hannah, born Oct 28, 1812, married Micajah R. Ayres on October 20, 1839. They had five children: Sarah (Aug 21 1840), Louisa (Oct 4, 1842), Elias (Aug 16, 1846), Maria (May 26, 1850), and Margaret P., (Apr 20, 1853).

Micajah Ayres is shown in Pike Township of Clark County, Ohio in the 1850 census, age 36 (34?), a farmer born in New Jersey, with Margaret, 37, Sarah, 10, Louisa, 7, Elias, 4, and Mariah, one month, all born in Ohio.

There is a biography of M.R. Ayres in the Pike Township section of the History of Clark County, 1881. It reads: "M.R. Ayres, farmer; P.O. Christianburg, Champaign Co. The subject of this sketch is the son of Caleb and Esther Ayres, who were natives of New Jersey; they were united in marriage in 1816 and emigrated to Ohio in 1818, but did not settle permanently until 1828, when they located in Pike Township, on the farm where his son, M.R., now resides; Mrs. Ayres departed this life August 20, 1835, at the age of 46 years; they were both Seven-Day Baptists. Mr. Ayres celebrated his marriage with his second wife (Lydia Babcock) in 1837. M.R., the subject of this sketch, was born in New Jersey Dec. 5, 1817; his boyhood days were spent at home, assisting his father with the duties of the farm and going to school during the winters."

"He was married to Margaret Priest, born Oct. 28, 1812, the daughter of Elijah and Hannah Priest, who settled in this county in 1818; they (Mr. and Mrs. Ayres) are the parents of one son and four daughters, all of whom are now living, viz.: Sarah, born Aug. 21, 1840; Louisa, born Oct. 4, 1842; Elias, born Aug. 16, 1846; Maria, born May 26, 1850; Margaret P., born April 20, 1853. As an evidence of the popularity and esteem with which he was held in the community where he lived, he was elected Trustee of is township and other offices, the duties of which were discharged by him to the entire satisfaction of all concerned. Mr. Ayres is a member of the Christian Church, and hold sever offices in the same. He has always taken a deep interest in politics, and his principles are identified with the Democratic Party."

Elijah Priest, Jr. -- possible son of Elijah and Hannah, he is shown in Parker Moore Cemetery in Delaware County, Indiana with Elijah and Hannah, as Elijah Priest, Jr., died October 6, 1853 age 28 years, 2 mos., and 19 days.
      ----------------
Bathsheba Priest -- the fifth child of Jeremiah and Millie. Shown to have been born March 17, 1789 in Culpeper County. She married Frederick Mock in Clark Co., Ohio on December 19, 1811, and died in 1866 in Clark County. Frederick was shown to have been born 1787 in Pennsylvania and died in 1832[The Western Pioneer in Clark County ran an administration notice for the Estate of Frederick Mock, deceased, late of Clark County, Andrew Reyburn, Adm. on March 31, 1832]. They had only two children, Esron, born 1818 and Samuel, born 1820, that had been recorded in certain Priest researchers' records. Joe Zimmerman, a descendant of Bathsheba through a third child, a daughter Julia, adds to the record on Bathsheba. It is this daughter that Bathsheba Mock was living with in the 1860 census below.

About the Mocks, Joe Zimmerman writes: "Frederick Mock, born 1787 in PA, and died in 1832, at the age of 45, in Pike Township, Clark County, Ohio, and was buried in the McKendre Church Yard. Sometime prior to 1810, he married to Babsheba Priest, daughter of Jeremiah and Millie (Gardner) Priest in Clark County, Ohio. As recorded in the 1881 History of Clark County: Frederick and Babsheba (Priest) Mock were among the early settlers of the county having purchased their farm in 1810. Frederick Mock was a very useful man in the neighborhood, being a mechanic. He made the first wagon used in the township, he also made the buhrs in all of the first mills of this county.

Frederick and Babsheba were the parents of eight children, namely: Mary, wife of Jarred Sexton; Hannah, wife of Peter Blue; Casandra, wife of Joseph C. Wells; Peter; Esron; Julie Ann, wife of William Shell; Frederick and Samuel. Frederick and Babsheba's entire life was lived in the Pike Township, Clark County, Ohio area. Their religious adherence was given to the Methodist faith. They were members of the McKendre M.E. Church."

As part of the papers with her father Jeremiah's estate, Basheba Mock of Pike Township in Clark County, signed a statement on June 13, 1839 acknowledging that she had received her $100 share. It was signed with "her mark", and the two witnesses were Margaret Priest and Hannan Ann Priest.

Esron, shown to have been born in Kentucky, married Catherine Oatewalt on August 5, 1839 in Clark County. They had three children: George C.(Sept 2, 1843, m. Margaret Davis in 1870), Mary E., and Joanna B.

Samuel, shown to have been born in 1820 and died in Clark County in 1877, married Mary A. Botkin. They had eight children, Malissa (ca. 1848-Jan 31, 1854), Lucinda, Evalean, Ellen, John P., Julia A., George M. (ca 1861-Jan 5, 1878), and Vesper B.

In the 1850 census, Bathsheba is shown as 58, born in Kentucky, and is in Clark County with her son Samuel Mock, 20, Mary A., 20, and Melissa, 1, all born in Ohio. Also shown nearby is Frederick Mock, 23, and Julia, 25, both born in Ohio. Also in Pike Township in Clark County, is Esrom Mock, a 34 year old farmer born in Ohio, with Catharin, 34, Margaret A., 9, Geo., 7, and Mary E., 3, all born in Ohio.

In the 1860 census, "Bershebe" Mock is shown as 71, born in Virginia, and living with William Shell and Julia, both 36 and born in Ohio, and Madison, 6, and Frederick, 4. Also shown in Clark County in 1860 is Ersom Mock, 43, born in Ohio, Catherine, 43, born in Virginia, and Margaret, 18, George 17, Mary 13, and Joanna, 6, all born in Ohio. Samuel Mock is shown as 40, a farmer born in Ohio, with Mary, 30, Margaret, 9, Mary, 7, Ellen, 5, John, 3, and Julian, 1, all born in Ohio.

There is a biography of Samuel in the 1881 Clark County history, which gives some of the story of his father: "Samuel Mock, deceased. Samuel Mock was born in the year 1820, and died in the year 1877. He was the son of Frederick and Barsheba (Priest) Mock, who were among the early settlers of the county, having purchased the farm owned by the deceased in about the year 1810. Frederick Mock was a very useful man in the neighborhood, being a mechanic. He made the first wagon used in the township; he also made the buhrs in all the first mills of the country. . . " There is also a biography in this book of George G. Mock, son of Samuel's brother Esron.
